Before you buy your first pair of rocker bottom shoes, understand that there are two types of rocker soles: stable and unstable. Each type is designed to do different things so knowing about these categories helps you make a more informed decision before you spend your money.

Stable Rocker Soles

As the name suggests, a stable sole gives you more stability as you walk because these shoes propel you forward, but do not waver in a side-to-side motion. This medial and lateral security works best if you have difficulty with balance, weak ankles or prefer less wobbling as you move. Additionally, the heel-to-toe degree in relation to the ground also varies with stable shoes. Choose a more aggressive degree, such as Ryn, for a better workout, or opt for less severe angle like Fin Comfort (Finnamic) for the most stability. Other brands of stable shoes include Mephisto Sano, Cogent and Z-CoiL.

Unstable Rocker Soles

Unstable rocker soles do not provide security in all ranges of motion, from left to right and front to back. These sneakers are best if you want to get the most aggressive workout because your muscles are forced to worker harder to maintain your posture. Many people liken this to walking on sand or cobblestone. If you want the most severe degree of muscle engagement, choose a brand like the MBT Chapa. Brands including Reebok, FitFlop, Skechers and Joya also offer unstable rocker bottom shoes.
